Once upon a time America and Americans condemned Communism and instead exported our values of democracy and freedom throughout the world. In March of 1983 Ronald Reagan condemned the Communist Soviet Union.
Reagan said “let us pray for the salvation of all of those who live in that totalitarian darkness – pray they will discover the joy of knowing God. But until they do, let us be aware that while they preach the supremacy of the State, declare its omnipotence over individual man, and predict its eventual domination of all peoples on the earth, they are the focus of evil in the modern world.”
While the Soviet Union was the focus of evil in 1983, it is the Communist Chinese who are the focus of evil nearly 40 years later. They have supplanted the Soviet Union as America’s greatest adversary. But while communism remains the same, America and Americans have apparently changed. We no longer export and advocate for the uniquely American values of democracy and freedom, but import the dangerous, deadly, and inhumane philosophy of Communism, which we once condemned.
As many of you have doubtless read, the actor and former wrestler John Cena recently issued an apology to the communist Chinese government — in Mandarin — for making a casual reference to Taiwan as a country, while promoting his newest film. It was more than an apology, however. It was emasculating; an embarrassing display of an American slobbering on his knees at the feet of an enemy Nation.
